Senior Scientist, Large Scale Synthetic Chemistry

The Role

We are seeking a new member to join our team as Senior Scientist focused on large-scale synthetic chemistry. Our team is part of the Early Chemical Development department within Pharmaceutical Sciences at AstraZeneca. Working closely with both medicinal chemists and process chemists you will explore, develop and scale-up safe, efficient, and cost-effective synthetic routes to drug candidates. The position is laboratory based, and the appointee will requireexceptionally good practical laboratory skills, preferably including experience at the 2-50 literscale. The role is based at AstraZeneca’s vibrant R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Pharmaceutical Sciences is a function within the AstraZeneca’s Biopharmaceuticals R&D unit that creates innovative, efficient solutions by transforming molecules into investigative medicines meeting unmet needs of future patients. The function has five departments: Early Chemical Development, Advanced Drug Delivery, Early Product Development and Manufacturing, Project Management, and Data Science and Modelling. Our multifaceted portfolio of projects includes traditional small molecules, nucleotide-based therapies, and nanomedicines across AstraZeneca’s therapy areas.

Early Chemical Development is responsible for developing manufacturing routes and processes as well as delivering batches of drug substance for projects in the late discovery and early development portfolioand its key skill areas include Analytical Chemistry, Crystallization, Isotope Chemistry, Large-Scale Laboratory (Kilo-Lab) Manufacturing, Process Chemistry, Process Engineering and Separation Science.

The Large-Scale Synthetic Chemistry Team in Gothenburg delivers high-quality API batches in the range of 100-1000 g through the development and implementation of great chemistry, innovative routes, and creative solutions. The laboratory is the single company wide asset for large scale, non-GMP manufacturing of API for pre-clinical toxicology studies for all therapy areas.We support the projects with the highest priority and most technically challenging chemistry in the AstraZeneca early phase portfolio. We have access to top-quality labs and equipment, including reactors up to 100L, flow- and high-pressure reactors, and a wide range of modern analytical instruments.

TypicalAccountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute large-scale synthetic routes to delivertarget compounds in the range of 100-1000 grams.

  • Optimize reaction conditions and processes to improve yield, purity, and efficiency.

  • Conduct thorough analysis and characterization of synthesized compounds using appropriate analytical techniques.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments, procedures, and results.

  • Plan and prioritize own work and actively collaborate with other members of project teams.

  • Ensure compliance with best practices and health, safety, and environment regulations in the laboratory.

  • Stay current with the latest advancements in synthetic chemistry and apply new methodologies as appropriate.

  • Publish novel work in peer reviewed journals.

Education, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Essentialrequirements

  • APh.D. in Organic Chemistry or a related fieldor a B.Sc.in Chemistry with at least 3 years relevant postgraduate experience (ideally gained within a pharmaceutical company or a pharmaceutical CDMO)

  • Ability to independently design, plan and execute multistep syntheses.

  • Demonstratedexpertise in analytical chemistry, purification, and crystallization.

  • Proven laboratory skills and a strong desire tocontribute practically.

  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and planning skills with a strong sense of responsibility, teamwork, and delivery focus. 

Desirable requirements

  • Research experience, preferably from work with route development and large-scale synthesis of complex organic molecules. 

  • Experienceof kilogram scalemanufacture, process safety and chemical engineering principles.

  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of organic chemistry, with good awareness of current literature.

  • Able to identify, develop and apply new technologies and ways of working within large scale synthetic organic chemistry.

  • Experience of working at the interface of Medicinal Chemistry with Process Chemistry

  • Curious and innovative mindset.

  • Passion for solving complex synthetic problems and demonstrate proof of concept for new route.
