Postdoctoral Researcher: Uptake and translocation of therapeutic nanoparticles across blood vessels
Location:
Gothenburg, Sweden
Type of employment: Temporary contract (3 years)
Start date: August/September, 2025

We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join our Applied Transgenic Models Team within Translational Genomics at Discovery Sciences. This role is perfect for a driven scientist ready to engage in a groundbreaking project that requires both strategic insight and tactical expertise. Located at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden, this on-site position places you at the heart of our innovative efforts, where your contributions will drive forward new discoveries and applications in translational genomics.

About this Project:
The Postdoctoral position is funded by Horizon Europe and available for a highly skilled and motivated cell biologist with extensive experience and innovative knowledge in advanced cell models and microfluidic chip technologies to interrogate the biophysical interactions between drug carriers and endothelial cells in the process of nanoparticle trans-endothelial transport and drug release across the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB). Using a BBB chip platform to mimic specific conditions and enable targeted studies to identify nanoparticles with therapeutic potential, facilitating further evaluation in preclinical studies using transgenic mouse models to understand in vivo efficacy. The BBB platform will allow the evaluation of key parameters of nanoparticle behaviour including toxicity, endothelial cell interactions, trans-endothelial transport, drug release.

This postdoctoral position relates to Horizon Europe funded NAP4DIVE consortium, partners include: Åbo Akademi University, Finland; Betthera, Czechia; Chalmers University, Sweden; Gothenburg University, Sweden; Delft University of Technology, Netherlands; Hansabiomed Life Sciences, Estonia; Microfluidic Innovation Center, Paris; Finnadvance, Finland; Elveflow, France.

What you’ll do:
In this Postdoctoral position, you are an expert in advanced cell biology, experienced in the use of 3D cell co-culture. You will devise, champion and develop scientific areas aligned with project needs and be an authority in cell biology using both established and the latest techniques to lead the project from a lab-based perspective and to make significant contributions to the practical delivery of project goals in the area of targeted delivery.

Your Key responsibilities will include:
•    Lead and innovate in the field of cell biology using both established methods and groundbreaking techniques.
•    Coach and support junior scientists, offering guidance and challenging them to reach their potential through the interpretation of complex data.
•    Provide scientific leadership and represent the Applied Transgenic Models Team at internal interdisciplinary meetings in addition to external meetings, including NAP4DIVE consortium meetings.
•    Propose experimental strategies, troubleshoot problems and make significant contributions to the practical delivery of projects in compliance with AstraZeneca corporate responsibility policies and relevant safety standards.

In this position you’ll develop and implement flow cytometry-based assays for cell characterisation and functional analysis including panel design. You'll be involved in designing, conducting, interpreting, and reporting on studies that use advanced cell models and microphysiological systems (MPS). Additionally, you will play a key role in progressing in vitro studies for further testing in transgenic mouse models.

Essential requirements for the role:

•    PhD degree + 4 years of relevant experience

•   Solid expertise in cell biology, biotechnology, medical Biosciences or similar

•    Proficiency in advanced cell models, including assay development, troubleshooting, and data interpretation. Strong hands-on advanced cell culture experience
•    Experience in 3D cell culture, i.e. Organoids, multicellular co-cultures, microfluidic chips
•    Experience with advanced neuronal cell models
•    Versatile in-vitro analytical methods (e.g., qPCR, staining and high-content imaging, plate-based assays such as ELISAs, IHC)
•    Independent study design, laboratory work, and data analysis
•    Data visualization and statistical analysis
•    An open and innovative attitude- required to devise, initiate and contribute to the implementation of novel groundbreaking tools for the generation of in vitro models
•    Proven experience of leading projects
•    Proven experience in the generation of scientific presentations and manuscripts for publication

We see that you have good social and communication skills, are collaborative and a great teammate. You should also be able to work independently and have a positive, goal oriented and problem-solving attitude. Excellent English is required, both spoken and written, and good organizational skills are crucial.

Desirable requirements for the role:
•    Experience with advanced neuronal cell models
•    Experienced in working with mouse models
•    Experience of drug discovery in an industrial setting
