The Opportunity

We have an exciting, high‑impact leadership opportunity for an Executive Director, US Marketing, Rare Nephrology. This role is accountable for setting the U.S. commercial vision and driving all aspects of strategy, execution, and field enablement across the Rare Nephrology portfolio—including current brands and future indications. As a core member of the US Rare Hematology & Nephrology Leadership Team, you will shape enterprise strategy, culture, and talent development while ensuring integrated and compliant commercialization.

What You Will Do:

Strategic Leadership & Brand Ownership

  • Define the commercial vision for the U.S. Rare Nephrology business, translating enterprise and global direction into actionable U.S. brand plans.

  • Lead development and execution of disease education, diagnostic strategies, and brand initiatives that drive demand generation and appropriate utilization.

  • Oversee portfolio and lifecycle strategy, including launch readiness and post‑launch optimization.

  • Ensure alignment across personal and non‑personal promotion, omnichannel engagement, and field execution.

  • Lead TLL strategy and execution across KOL engagement, speaker programs, patient initiatives, and insights generation.

Cross‑Functional & External Engagement

  • Partner closely with Sales, Medical Affairs, Market Access, Patient Advocacy, Regulatory, Legal, and Compliance to ensure integrated planning and flawless execution.

  • Build and deepen engagement with key external stakeholders, including national and regional KOLs, patient organizations, and advocacy groups.

  • Represent U.S. Rare Nephrology marketing in enterprise and global forums.

  • Collaborate with Sales leadership to implement commercial tactics and monitor performance.

  • Lead cross‑functional teams to design strategies and tactics that deliver national and sub‑national Rare Nephrology goals, supported by clear KPIs and performance tracking.

  • Oversee annual and quarterly business planning processes, together with cross-functional partners, enabling regional business planning with modern approaches, tools, and insights.

People Leadership & Capability Building

  • Hire, onboard, and coach a high‑performing marketing team, fostering future‑ready capabilities in brand strategy, omnichannel execution, insights, and launch excellence.

  • Create a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Bring forward best practices from across Alexion/AZ and the industry, promoting learning, curiosity, and innovation.

  • Lead development of customer segmentation and transform analytics into actionable customer insights.

  • Manage the U.S. promotional budget.

  • Oversee agency and vendor relationships and ensure productive collaboration across Alexion teams.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or business field.

  • 10+ years of pharmaceutical or biotech marketing experience.

  • Significant commercial leadership experience with demonstrated success in driving brand strategy and execution.

  • Proven ability to lead cross‑functional teams in a matrix environment.

  • Deep understanding of the U.S. healthcare environment, including political and access dynamics.

  • Track record of developing and implementing strategies that deliver strong commercial results.

  • Experience managing promotional budgets and external agencies.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; proven ability to build high‑performing teams.

  • Strong personal ethics, integrity, and commitment to patient‑centricity.

  • Ability to work effectively in an office‑based environment, engaging in complex problem‑solving, collaboration, and multi‑channel communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD, MBA).

  • Prior sales or sales management experience.

  • Experience in nephrology.

  • Background in rare disease.

This position is based at our Boston, MA campus (US Headquarters for Alexion). The annual base pay for this position ranges from $270,221 - 405,332 USD. Our positions offer eligibility for various incentives—an opportunity to receive short-term incentive bonuses, equity-based awards for salaried roles and commissions for sales roles. Benefits offered include qualified retirement programs, paid time off (i.e., vacation, holiday, and leaves), as well as health, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms of the applicable plans.
