We are looking for an in vivo pharmacologist with industry experience to join the oncology R&D Boston team at AstraZeneca, located in Waltham, MA.  As a Principal Scientist, you will provide strategic leadership to projects and manage a team of in vivo scientists to support our hematological cancer drug portfolio. This role requires a blend of drug development experience in oncology, coupled with strong people management skills and demonstration of scientific leadership. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of in vivo pharmacologists including PhD level scientists; provide oversight and scientific guidance of in vivo lead biologists to ensure high quality in vivo data generation including:
    • in vivo target validation and proof of concept
    • in vivo PK/PD/efficacy studies for lead optimization and drug candidate selection
    • in vivo therapeutic efficacy trials for dose and schedule optimization
    • in vivo mechanism-based combination studies to guide development of clinical assets. 
  • As a project lead biologist, provide strategic guidance and leadership of the biology team for projects through all stages of drug discovery including target validation stage to clinical proof of concept.
  • Provide in vivo pharmacology and disease model expertise across multiple projects within our drug discovery portfolio.  
  • Provide scientific mentorship, professional development, guidance and leadership to junior scientist, ensuring alignment with overall department and organizational goals.
  • Promote the scientific reputation of AstraZeneca by recruiting new postdoctoral candidates, publishing novel research in peer reviewed journals, and presenting data at scientific meetings.

Essential Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Pharmacology or related discipline, with a minimum of 10 years industry experience.
  • Strong scientific track record of delivery, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Direct experience using mouse models of cancer to evaluate the in vivo pharmacology of small molecule drugs targeting cancer.
  • Strong scientific knowledge of oncology drug discovery including emerging concepts in cancer therapeutics.
  • Direct industry experience managing people in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills.
