To succeed in this vision, AstraZeneca are seeking a computational chemist for our Oncology medicinal chemistry department based in Waltham, Massachusetts. The successful candidate will be a professional computational chemist, with a passion for drug discovery and experience of working in drug discovery project teams within a biotech or pharmaceutical setting. You will be working closely with an established, transnational team of computational chemists within AstraZeneca working on oncology drug discovery projects across a range of modalities and will have access to innovative computational methods, such as our FEP and AI platforms, and excellent lead generation capabilities. A particular focus point of this position is the support of the TTD chemistry group in developing high potency ligands for targeted delivery, including antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) and other targeting modalities.

Key responsibilities

Setting and delivering on computational and medicinal chemistry strategies for the TTD chemistry group to impact project success at all stages from drug target identification through clinical candidate nomination of targeted therapeutics, including antibody drug conjugates.

Build a new computational chemistry group within the ecosystem of the AstraZeneca computational chemistry department and lead global efforts on ligand discovery projects spanning hit identification/screening, hit to lead, and lead optimization.

Develop binding pose hypotheses for novel chemical matter using public and proprietary X-ray/cryo-EM structures/models while assimilating project SAR in support of structure-based design efforts.

This will include structure- and ligand-based design and data analysis, extracting insight from large proprietary structural biology and SAR data sets; your contributions to molecular design will be expected to result in inventorship on patent applications.

You will work closely with scientists from other disciplines including structural biology, biophysics, ADME/DMPK and safety sciences as part of the wider drug discovery project team, and will present your work regularly to peers and senior partners.

You will be encouraged to publish your work regularly in high quality scientific journals and at national and international conferences.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D degree in computational chemistry or relevant field
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience working as a computational chemist on drug discovery projects in a Pharmaceutical or Biotech setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced experience in groundbreaking structure-based drug design techniques, including docking, homology modeling, molecular dynamics simulations, and virtual screening
  • Experience with ligand-based design approaches (including pharmacophore modeling, QSAR, similarity and similarity/shape-based commercial database searching)
  • Advanced knowledge with commercial and/or open source molecular modeling, data mining software and cheminformatics tools
  • Excellent team building ability and leadership experience
  • A passion for drug discovery and an excellent understanding of medicinal chemistry concepts
  • Innovative problem-solver, with a track record of impacting drug project delivery
  • Scientific and project impact exemplified by high quality scientific publications
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, team-working and time-management skills

The Waltham R&D site is home to our small-molecule oncology research in North America and is situated within a biopharma cluster of academic research institutions, medical centers, pharmaceutical companies and biotech startups.
