AstraZeneca (AZ) is a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development, and commercialization of prescription medicines for some of the world's most serious diseases.


We’re looking for an ambitious, experienced Senior UX Designer to support the UX Lead in Macclesfield as well as the wider Global UX group at AstraZeneca.

Digital products and services are becoming increasingly important for AZ, whether these are aimed at patients (e.g., an asthma inhaler connected to a mobile app to remind patients to take their medicines), doctors or colleagues (e.g. a web tool for scientists to visualize real-time data coming from a clinical trial).  To address this, 5 years ago, we created an in-house global User Experience team to promote User-Centred Design (UCD) across AZ and ensure that these products are both usable and desirable.

The UX team is currently made up of 18 experts in UX Research, UX Design and UI/ Visual Design, across the UK (Cambridge, Macclesfield), US (Wilmington, DE) and China (Shanghai).  We’re an empowered, growing team, offering great opportunities and able to make a real difference to people’s lives.


The Senior UX Designer will be responsible for driving UX and product design excellence and operations within the Macclesfield team and wider group. This includes a specific strategic focus on ensuring what and how we design is consistent, repeatable, and sustainable. The Senior UX Designer will be working on products and services that include both external (patient- and/or doctor-facing) and internal colleague-facing tools, and cover a range of platforms (devices, websites, mobile apps, etc.)  We are looking for someone who can consistently own and run a full, end-to-end UCD process, rather than focusing only on UX/ UI design tools and outputs.

You’ll be working with highly skilled and experienced researchers across the group and will need experience of being part of the research process, either being in the lab, part of contextual/ ethnographic research or other forms of user/design/behavioural research. You’ll be expected to plan how and where we prioritise the impact of research insights on design and be responsible for owning and leading projects in this capacity. You may choose to model your data through Personas or Experience Maps, or other strategic documents, but however you do it, you’ll bring your experience and knowledge to ensure what we do is valuable and useful across the business and for the populations we design for.

You’ll be expected to know and have experience with the most “common” design tools (take your pick) but this role prioritises specialties like information architecture, behavioural design, interaction design and design thinking/service design over pixel-perfect UI design. You will find ways to measure and prove the value that your design interventions have made.

As well as the tactical side of UX Design and Research, the role also includes a significant strategic side. You will support the Head of UX and the UX Leads in evangelizing the benefits of UX/ UCD across AZ, using a set of excellent case studies where UCD has made a measurable difference to business performance.  You will help to drive and develop new business and strategic relationships for yourself and the wider UX team.  You will also support training non-UX colleagues into UX/UCD methods and creating guidelines, style-guides and other materials to help them.

This is non-management role, but you’ll be expected to support, guide, and educate those around you who will look to you for your proven experience and support.

You’ll be given large amounts of autonomy and have the opportunity to drive and shape your practice and career whilst being given tools and training to improve your continuous learning.

  • Degree-level qualification (preferably postgraduate) in Ergonomics, Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Behavioural Science/Design or a related relevant field or other equivalent formal training

  • Strong understanding of UX principles, both from formal/academic learning and/or on-the-job experience

  • Strong experience as a UX Practitioner in an applied industrial (not just academic) environment – working either in or for large, client-side companies on complex projects

  • Experience across UX Research methodologies – e.g., interviews, surveys, usability testing, field trials – and how they fit into a full UCD process. (Direct experience moderating such research is valuable but not essential).

  • Strong Experience using research insights to make design decisions, and in creating strategic design documents such as Personas, User Journey Maps and Storyboards and other related (service) design documents

  • Strong Experience creating high-level information architectures, low-level flows and wireframes, interaction designs, interactive prototypes, etc.

  • Experience with UX design and interactive prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, InVision, Axure, Adobe XD)

  • Strong experience and knowledge across various platforms including, mobile, web, wearables & voice (although the last two are not essential)

  • Analytical skills; comfortable working with big, complex, numerical data

  • A portfolio of case studies where good UCD has made a measurable (quantitative) difference to the quality of digital products and services


  • The drive, energy, and proactivity to develop new business opportunities and relationships for yourself and the wider UX team

  • An excellent listener, with the ability to quickly filter the relevant user insights for design

  • An excellent presenter, succinctly imparting UX designs, with appropriate rationale, in both written and spoken formats, and in plain, non-technical, language

  • Great influencing skills, including the ability to evangelize UCD to stakeholders

  • A great team player, able to work well as part of a small UX team and also collaborate closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, Technical Developers, etc.
