Discovery Sciences is a multi-faceted department which drives early drug discovery across AstraZeneca’s global Research & Development portfolio. Mechanistic Biology & Profiling (part of Discovery Sciences), is a global, multidisciplinary department responsible for mechanism-of-action studies and compound profiling for efficacy and pre-clinical safety in support of the Oncology, Cardiovascular and Renal Disease, Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity, and Neuroscience portfolios.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the US Associate Director of the Mechanistic Biology & Profiling Department you will be an integral member of a team generating pre-clinical pharmacology data to predict and understand compound (and novel drug modalities) efficacy.

You will provide early, impactful mechanistic insight to projects across the Oncology and Neuroscience disease areas, through a combination of in vitro enzymology, pharmacology, and quantitative cell biology. You will be a skilled and passionate lab-based scientist, able to represent the department across a range of therapeutic projects and global initiatives, and also externally. You will be involved in scientific and technical innovation, including through external collaboration and partnership.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD and some experience preferred or MSc and at least 8 years of relevant experience required
  • Formal training and proven expertise (PhD or MSc + equivalent industry experience) in a quantitative biology-based discipline (enzymology, pharmacology, quantitative cell biology)
  • Eternal reputation in pharmacology and/or enzymology, gained through professional recognition, external presentation and/or publication in high-impact journals
  • Track record of delivering results across a diverse project portfolio

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience in pre-clinical drug discovery
  • Experience of establishing and leading external collaborations
